Robert O'Callahan, a developer who worked for Mozilla, the organization that develops the Firefox browser, has joined the growing group of experts who criticize antivirus security solutions that they find useless and even dangerous.

According to O'Callahan, several antivirus solutions have blocked or disabled Firefox updates to enhance the security of the internet browser. That's because they interfered with certain functions of security programs. According to him, through these practices, antivirus manufacturers are preventing software developers from launching safer products. "Antivirus products poison the software ecosystem because their invasive and poorly implemented code prevents browser providers and other developers from improving their security," O'Callahan said.

And Project Zero, the Google security experts team, has discovered many serious vulnerabilities in known security solutions, including NOD32, Avast, Symantec, Sophos, or Malwarebytes anti-malware. In many cases, their developers did not follow standard security procedures.

Another voice critic of antivirus programs is Justin Schuh, a manager working in Google Chrome's security team. He has worked for IBM and the CIA.

The former employee of Mozilla recommends that people use Windows Defender, the security solution that comes preinstalled in the operating system developed by Microsoft. "There is little evidence that known non-Microsoft antivirus products offer a net improvement in security," he wrote on his personal blog.
